New York residents have likely heard quite a few news stories about nursing homes in the state in the last couple of years or so. The care of the most vulnerable among us is always a sensitive issue with, on the one hand, great appreciation for those who go into the caregiver line of work while, on the other hand, the high expectations that we all have for the care of the elderly or those with serious medical conditions. So, when there are allegations of abuse or neglect at a nursing home, it is a serious issue.
How can you address nursing home abuse or neglect if you suspect such behavior might be occurring at a facility where your loved one resides? Again, it is a sensitive issue, but it helps to know how to spot abuse or neglect.
Know the signs, take action
Abuse may be easier to spot – unexplained bruises or even broken bones could be evidence of physical abuse, while a change in attitude or being withdrawn may be signs that a resident is suffering from mental abuse, for example. Neglect, on the other hand, could be more difficult to spot. Issues such as bedsores, malnutrition or even infections may be attributed to the resident’s medical conditions or behavior by the nursing home staff, but these may actually be examples of neglect.
If you think you have spotted signs of nursing home abuse or neglect, you may need to consider taking legal action. It is important to hold nursing homes to a high standard to ensure that all residents of nursing homes throughout New York get the proper respect and treatment.
