Nursing home abuse takes on many forms

Nursing home abuse should never be tolerated in any form, as it puts an already vulnerable patient at risk of serious physical or emotional injury or death.

If a loved one resides in a nursing home, it's critical to keep a watchful eye out for abuse. Neglecting to do so could result in something serious slipping past you.

Here are three of the most common forms of nursing home abuse:

  • Physical abuse: This comes in many forms, such as striking a patient and failure to provide treatment, such as to prevent bedsores. Physical abuse is often the easiest to pinpoint, as you can visually see the signs.
  • Emotional abuse: It's more difficult to spot, especially if your loved one is reluctant to talk about the care they're receiving. A common form of emotional abuse is a staff member calling a patient names or talking down on them.
  • Financial abuse: This occurs when a staff member attempts to extort money from a patient for their own gain. For instance, they tell them that they won't physically abuse them if they give them money.

In some cases, a patient is subjected to more than one form of abuse at the same time. Emotional abuse and financial abuse often go together hand in hand.

If you suspect abuse of a loved one in a nursing home, don't wait another minute to take action. Talk to the person in charge, express your concerns and demand that they open an investigation.

Depending on what you find, it may be time for your loved one to move to another facility, while also taking steps to protect their legal rights.
