What should you know about a misdiagnosis?

When you're not feeling well, all you want to do is get better. You may call someone and have them take you to the doctor or call an ambulance to go to the emergency room.

You expect your medical provider to do all they can to make you well, but the reality is that many misdiagnose their patients or ignore very serious symptoms to move to the next patient more quickly. That kind of negligence can lead to serious consequences for a patient struggling with an illness.

How common is a misdiagnosis?

It may be hard to tell. Sometimes, misdiagnoses aren't caught. A patient's health might improve on its own, or a patient could die from an illness without ever knowing the real cause. Experts have put the rate of misdiagnosis as high as 40%, but there is no way to know for sure because there is no real way to report misdiagnoses.

If a patient passes away, family members have the right to ask for an autopsy to determine why they did. These can be expensive, though, which is why they occur so rarely.

A missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis can happen to anyone. Lucky patients are those who continue to seek answers and fight for an accurate diagnosis when something doesn't seem right.

If you continue to suffer from symptoms after you've been treated for any kind of medical problem, it's in your best interest to seek out a second opinion. Keep exploring because missed and misdiagnoses are common, so your persistence could help you find the answers you're looking for.
