What is neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy?

The most frightening injuries are often the ones that you cannot see. And there is no situation more fraught with emotions, good and bad, as the birth of a new life. Parents are always highly invested in the health of their offspring from the first moment they know they are coming. If the health is not perfect, parents may need help caring for their children.

How serious are birth injuries?

A variety of injuries that occur at birth can be easily dismissed, as they have been for centuries. The trauma of leaving the womb can cause bruising and scratching on the body and head, but most of these abrasions and swelling disappear in a few days. Some injuries, however, may not even manifest until months later.

What is a major concern among birth injuries?

One concern is neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), which can occur if delays or complications during a baby's delivery restrict the flow of oxygen or blood in their body for a period of time. The effects of HIE range from cerebral palsy to slowed cognitive development.

How can parents recognize HIE?

Newborns often have abnormal reactions to stimuli, either exhibiting lowered responses or appearing overstimulated. Strange movements like tics and seizures may also be a physiological effect. Weakened respiration, especially weakened vocalizations like crying, may occur after HIE.

How can parents get help for treatment?

Some injuries may be permanent, but parents may be able to get help in the form of financial damages if a New York physician's or hospital's liability in the cause can be proven. An attorney can help investigate individual cases of HIE and other birth injuries and advise on the likelihood of suing successfully for damages.
