Issues with communication can lead to hospital negligence

Going to the hospital is a very stressful situation no matter the reason for your visit. You don't expect to leave the hospital in a worse condition than when you arrived. However, this happens all too often at hospitals in New York City and throughout the country. Today, we will discuss the issues with communication that can lead to hospital negligence.

Some of the most common miscommunication issues occur between doctors and other medical providers. These issues include the following:

  • Poor documentation of the patient's treatment
  • Miscommunicating about the condition of the patient
  • Failing to read medical records of the patient

Miscommunication errors also occur between the medical provider and the patient being cared for in the hospital. The most common errors in this category include the following:

  • Language barrier
  • Unsympathetic reaction to the patient's concerns
  • Inadequately informing the patient about medications
  • Improper informed consent
  • Failure to provide any information to the patient or providing the wrong information
  • Providing incomplete instructions about how the patient should follow up after their hospital stay

These common hospital miscommunication errors are often caused by the following:

  • Workplace culture
  • Workplace distractions
  • Issues with the electronic record-keeping system of the hospital
  • Pressure of the doctor's workload

When there is a miscommunication between your doctor and a nurse or you and your doctor, it can lead to serious negligence issues. You might suffer an additional injury, illness or infection due to an error in communication. It's important to ask questions and have someone with you when meeting with a doctor while in the hospital.
