How do I choose the right nursing home for my parent?

| Nov 10, 2019 | Nursing Home Neglect

When the time comes to move your parent into a nursing home, you will experience a rush of emotions. You will likely feel guilty because you can no longer care for them on your own, and you will be nervous about how they will be treated by the staff. Today, we will explain how you can choose the right nursing home for your parent.

When you take a tour of the nursing homes in your area, be sure to sit in on at least one meal service while you are there. This will help you see the type of food that is served and how the staff interacts with the residents.

Take a look at how the residents use their time. Are there plenty of activities available for the residents to enjoy at the nursing home? The best nursing homes should offer a long list of activities for their residents to enjoy each day of the week.

Find out who is in charge of the nursing home. If no one can tell you who the administrator of the nursing home is during your visit, it is a sign of high turnover in the administration.

Ask about what will happen if a higher level of care is needed for your parent. Is there an assisted living facility attached to the nursing home? Or, will you have to move your parent to a new facility?

Choosing the right nursing home for your parent is challenging. You likely won’t be able to spot abuse with the naked eye when on a visit. However, be sure to follow the tips outlined here today, and you should have no trouble at all finding the right home for your parent.
