Fungus runs rampant at NY nursing homes

Nursing homes are not generally thought of as a place of disease and sickness. Many people move into nursing homes to recover from serious injuries or to be looked after as they may not be able to live on their own and take care of themselves. Yet, some nursing homes in New York and throughout the U.S. have become breeding grounds for deadly germs, including fungus.

A highly-contagious fungus, known as Candida auris, has spread throughout nursing homes in New York. Over the past four years, the fungus has infected 800 people and a surprising half of patients affected died within 90 days of receiving the fungus.

In one nursing home in Brooklyn, at least 40 patients are currently infected with Candida auris and nursing home officials are screening patients who come in and out of the facility. Not everyone who has the fungus on their bodies show signs of being infected. They are simply carriers of the fungus and spread it to other patients. Sadly, the fungus is resistant to most antifungal medications.

According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases, long-term care facilities have an extremely high rate of colonization of drug-resistant bacteria and fungus. People pass the germs to one another without even knowing they have them on their skin.

If you have gotten sick or have been affected by a debilitating infection while staying at a long-term care facility or nursing home, you may want to contact a New York nursing home abuse lawyer regarding your rights.
