Resident death leads to manslaughter charge

People who live in New York and who must face the tough decision of how to best provide care for their aging relatives know how hard and upsetting this can be. It can be difficult to wrap one's mind around the fact that a person they once knew as strong and able to take care of them and of themselves now needs such help. It can be even more difficult to think about the fact that the person might be mistreated by the very individuals who are tasked with caring for them.

Sadly, abuse and neglect in nursing homes is a very real problem today. Even with clear guidelines and regulations in place, tragic stories about elderly residents being injured or even dying due to this surface all too often. One such story occurred recently in neighboring New Jersey.

According to a report by CBS New York, a woman who was 85 lived at a nursing home and apparently suffered a fall one day. No details about how she fell are known but it was stated that she experienced a head injury. Instead of alerting someone and calling for help, one nurse's assistant simply put the woman in her bed and left her alone. Subsequently the assistant tried to indicate that other employees had been involved in the woman's fall. She also tried to suggest she had not previously known about the fall.

Once the resident's injury was known, she was transported to a hospital yet she died a short time later. The nursing assistant is now facing charges of manslaughter in the matter.
