Falls kill about 1,800 U.S. nursing home residents annually

When you help a loved one make a new home in a New York nursing home, you likely do so while feeling relatively confident in the level of care your parent or other loved one will receive while a resident there. Unfortunately, though, falls among older Americans are quite common in many nursing home environments, and at Futterman, Sirotkin & Seinfeld, LLP, we recognize that, while some falls are unavoidable, others result from negligence or environmental factors.

According to Industrial Safety & Hygiene News, the typical, 100-bed American nursing home reports somewhere between 100 and 200 resident falls annually, though many think the true number of older Americans falling in nursing homes is significantly higher. Regrettably, it is not unusual for nursing home resident falls to go unreported, and this happens, in some cases, when workers or employers fear facing sanctions for safety lapses.

The fact is, though, while nursing homes and similar settings are supposed to be safe places to live, older adults who live in nursing homes are falling more frequently than their peers living in alternative settings. Up to three-quarters of nursing home residents fall annually, according to statistics, which is more than double the rate of annual falls among older adults who live in other settings, such as on their own or with family members.

If your loved one has mobility issues, he or she may face an even higher risk of falling and suffering a serious injury. About a third of all falls affecting older adults involve people who are unable to walk on their own. You can find out more about nursing home negligence by visiting our webpage.
