Report exposes reasons for maternal mortality

Residents in New York who are expecting a new baby or who have a pregnant family member have good reason to be concerned about the health of not just the baby but the mother as well. While pregnancy and childbirth are normal events, they can expose babies and mothers to serious dangers.

In the United States, the maternal mortality rate has been on the rise recently and for some time, hospitals were pointing the finger of responsibility at the mothers themselves. Now, a recently released report shows that hospitals and medical providers may well have a bigger role in this problem than they would have liked the public to believe or know.

According to USA Today, out of the approximately 50,000 women who experience pregnancy- or childbirth-related complications every year, nearly 700 dies. Of those deaths, three out of every five are said to be preventable with proper medical care according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Failure on the part of medical professionals to accurately identify warning signs and take action is one factor identified in the number of preventable deaths. Other noted issues are missed or delayed diagnoses and a lack of access to proper medical care.

Many of the women who die during labor and delivery experience severe hemorrhaging or the release of amniotic fluid into their bloodstreams. Other women die within the first year after giving birth due to heart issues such as cardiomyopathy. Stroke is another problem that plagues many women and contributes to their deaths.
