Why do hospitals hide medical errors?

If you have ever had an issue with a medical error in New York, you may have discovered the hospital was somewhat secretive and pushed you to avoid getting anyone from the outside involved. This is a common practice with hospitals when it comes to medical malpractice, according to the Insurance Journal.

Hospitals want to keep investigations internal. They can handle and control the investigation this way. Furthermore, it prevents the leak of information. They have fewer worries about things going public. They also create privileged information that cannot be shared with outsiders, which is another layer of protection.

The main driving factor is money. When a hospital faces a medical malpractice issue, that often means a lawsuit and paying out a lot of money. They do not want a lawsuit or the bad publicity that comes from it.

However, conducting internal investigations means you may not get the information you should about the incident. It can also lead to issues with fixing whatever caused the issue to happen. It also adds to the overall trauma that you experience. It is not a healthy solution to such a situation for the hospital or for victims.

Hospitals should strive to be more transparent. If something goes wrong, they should be willing to work on it and fix it and properly accommodate the victims. When hospitals do this everyone wins because the system is made better and victims get proper recognition. This information is for education and should not be taken as legal advice.
