The influence of patients on preventing prescription errors

When emphasis is focused on preventing medical errors in New York, many people discuss what doctors, nurses, staff members and other health care professionals can do to eliminate the risks of injuring a patient. However, people seeking medical care also uphold some responsibility to protect themselves by being well informed and prepared to advocate for their health and their safety.

According to John Hopkins University, despite efforts to reduce the number of medical malpractice incidents that occur each year, errors still account for an alarming 250,000 deaths in the United States each year. Experts say with confidence that medical malpractice is now the third leading cause of death even though a majority of those cases were easily preventable.

Familydoctor.org suggest that patients pay close attention while their health care provider gives them instructions and information about the prescriptions they are recommending. People should also request their doctor provide clarification on aspects that are confusing. Sometimes, when a doctor is prescribing medication, he or she may use industry terminology that an average person may not understand. As such, people should be sure that they understand both their doctor's handwriting, as well as the name of the prescription that has been prescribed.

People should also be forthright in speaking with their health care provider about medications they are currently taking, as well as any allergic reactions they have previously experienced in the past. They should bring a complete list of the supplements and prescriptions they are taking, to be sure their doctor is aware and will not prescribe anything that could potentially have a negative interaction.
