3 signs you should seek a second medical opinion

Even when you feel fine, submitting to a medical examination can be intimidating. If you are in pain, though, having a successful medical visit can seem nearly impossible. Still, you must advocate for your own healthcare. If your regular doctor is not providing the care you need, you may need to seek a second medical opinion.

Medical misdiagnosis and mistreatment are likely more common than you think. In fact, doctors may initially misdiagnose as many as 20 percent of serious medical conditions. Still, your health is vital. Until you receive a proper diagnosis, you cannot focus on recovery. Here are three signs you should seek a second medical opinion:

1. Your doctor’s treatment plan is not working

Doctors are not perfect. Nonetheless, you should be able to trust your doctor to correctly diagnose your condition and recommend a treatment plan. If the rehabilitation, medication or other treatment your doctor prescribes does not make you feel better, you may need to ask a different doctor for help.

2. Your doctor cannot make a diagnosis

Dozens of medical conditions share symptoms. As such, it can be difficult to determine the cause of an illness. If your doctor has no idea what is making you feel ill, it is probably time to find a different doctor. Remember, if your doctor misses your diagnosis, you also may need to act quickly to preserve your legal rights

3. Your doctor is too busy

Modern medical practice requires doctors to carefully manage patients, staff, insurance providers, pharmaceutical companies and others. Still, your doctor should carefully examine you and listen to all your concerns. If your physician seems too busy to provide adequate care, you probably need a second opinion.

If you are lucky, you have an excellent doctor who provides exceptional care. Unfortunately, though, your physician may not meet all your medical needs. If you notice the signs of misdiagnosis or mistreatment, you probably need to entrust your medical care to a different doctor.
