Common fatal injuries on construction sites

Working in construction is a dangerous career in general. However, certain careless acts or mistakes can significantly increase the chances of accidents.

Some accidents on construction sites may lead to serious injury or even death. In fact, a few fatal injuries exist that construction workers are most susceptible to.

Falling

Falling is the number one cause of personal injuries on construction sites. In fact, slip-and-fall accidents are quite common anywhere. However, with the dangerous equipment all around, and the hard surfaces workers operate on, falls on construction sites can be quite serious and sometimes fatal. For this reason, companies have protocols in place in case there is a spill or slick area. When companies fail to ensure the implementation of such policies, the probability of negligent falls can increase.

Electrocution

Electric shock is very volatile and quite dangerous. As such, it is essential for anyone who handles electricity to follow safety standards put in place. The government provides general rules, as well as additional rules for those who specifically work with electricity. Certain companies, including construction and electricity companies, usually have additional protocols in place to protect their workers. The company should ensure all employees are aware of such company protocols.

Contact with equipment or objects

Contact with construction equipment, whether it be being struck by it or getting caught in between it, can cause extreme injuries. Simply by the sheer force and weight of the heavy machinery, employees are in great danger when operating and working around these objects. That is why, similar to electricity, companies should have protocols and training in place to ensure employees not only know how to work with the machinery, but also what to do in the case of an emergency involving the equipment.

While companies carry the brunt of the load of a safe work environment, employees should enact their own measures to ensure their safety as well. In cases where an employee acts properly and still receives an injury while on the job, he or she may be able to seek recompense.
