What is adult neglect?

One of the main reasons you put a loved one in a New York nursing home is so he or she will have constant care and get the proper attention to stay healthy and safe. When you discover that the nursing home has been negligent in their duties, it can be very upsetting. Your best defense against neglect issues to understand what constitutes neglect and the signs to watch for.

According to the National Adult Protective Services Association, neglect is when a caregiver does not give proper attention to a patient and disregards his or her needs. Neglect comes in many forms. It does not have to produce a physical result, although physical neglect is probably the best-known type. This is when a caregiver does not handle the patient's basic physical needs.

Neglect may also be financial. For example, if someone is supposed to pay a person's bills because he or she cannot do it, but the responsible person fails to pay the bills, then this is neglect. Abandonment is another type of neglect where a caregiver just leaves and does not arrange any other care for a person in need. These are not as common in a nursing home setting.

What you may find in a nursing home is emotional neglect. This is where caregivers abuse, ignore or mistreat your loved one in a non-physical way. They might treat him or her like a child and not give respect or they might completely ignore your loved one is in need of care.

Neglect is an issue when it threatens the health and well-being of your loved one. You might notice he or she becomes withdrawn or stops connecting with you. Your loved one may start to look neglected. You may notice he or she is not bathing or is losing weight. The living conditions may also reflect neglect if they are unkempt. If you notice such things, take steps to remedy the situation and stop the neglectful behavior. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
