What are the risks of IVC filters?

Deep venous thrombosis is a common issue that could lead to serious health risks if left untreated. There are generally two ways to treat this condition. According to the National Institutes of Health, if you have DVT, the doctor may use anticoagulation or an IVC filter. You may have heard commercials about IVC filter issues in New York and wonder if they really are safe.

Complications with these filters are actually not common. For some people, the bleeding risks are too high to do anticoagulation so the only option is an IVC filter. The main risks are bleeding issues and trauma to arteries in the surrounding area.

Other risks may occur due to improper placement. For example, your doctor may place the filter in the wrong spot or place it in an inverted position where it will not be effective. Improper placement may lead to the filter not opening completely, which, again, makes it ineffective or not as effective as it needs to be.

There are also risks where the device itself is defective or fails or where something goes wrong for an unexplained reason. This would include the filter moving, either moving to a whole new area or tilting. These issues can make it difficult to remove the filter when the time comes. There is also a possibility of the filter fracturing or breaking apart or becoming perforated.

As mentioned, complications are not common. Often, doctors catch issues early and can fix them before there is a bigger health risk. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
