Why do prescription errors happen in a pharmacy?

Medical malpractice in New York can be more than surgical errors and incorrect diagnoses, although both of those issues are very real problems. Prescription errors are another common mistake that while seemingly innocent by its name, can be extremely dangerous to you if you are given an incorrect prescription. Understanding why this type of error occurs is essential so you can better protect yourself from an avoidable mistake.

According to U.S. News, the shelves of any pharmacy you will ever go to are filled with copious amounts of drugs. Each has specialized dosage amounts and purposes that have to be strictly adhered to protect your wellbeing as the patient. Sometimes, the people behind the counter may grab the wrong bottle or put the incorrect dosage amount into your prescription. Other times, an incorrect label may be used on your prescription bottle. On average, your pharmacy fills about 25 prescriptions an hour which means you are not the only patient receiving specialized dosages of medication.

One of the best ways to protect yourself is to ask for counseling from your pharmacist. Even if you have taken the drug before and are familiar with its use and side effects, still take a minute to hear from your pharmacist to verify that none of the instructions have changed. It will also require your pharmacist to look at the label where potential mistakes can be caught before they affect your health. Another valuable suggestion to consider is to match the information on your prescription label with the information provided to you by your doctor.
