What to do when a loved one gets bedsores

Bedsores are one of the most common complications senior citizens develop at nursing homes. They are also one of the most preventable as long as the staff conducts due diligence.

It is easy to identify bedsores from strange changes in the skin's color, pus-like draining and swelling. The sores form as a result of constant pressure applied to a particular area of the body and the friction that occurs as a result of the skin rubbing against the bedding or clothing. It can quickly lead to worse health complications, which is why you need to act quickly to resolve the issue.

Seek medical attention immediately

You need to take your loved one out of the nursing home and to a doctor right away to address pressure sores. As long as you catch the sores early enough, treatment is relatively simple. The healing process will most likely consist of a combination of medication, cleaning and dressing. In the event the sores have advanced far enough, then surgery may be necessary.

The doctor will recommend a change in the environment to ensure sores do not form in the future. There are several ways to go about doing this, and most likely, you will need to change the mattress. Also, look into acquiring a better wheelchair cushion, developing an improved continence management plan and ensuring enhanced seating options.

Question the nursing home

Reputable nursing homes will have provisions in place to prevent bedsores at all costs. When sores do form, it is a clear sign of negligence. Once your loved one gets the care needed, question the nursing home about why this happened at all. Ask what bedsore protocols the establishment has in place and whether an individualized plan was put into effect. At the end of this, it may be for the best to find another nursing home.
