What are the risks of a forceps delivery?

Sometimes the actions your doctor takes during delivery to try to help you and your baby can actually do more harm than good. One such situation that may occur in a New York hospital is the use of forceps during delivery. While forceps can and have been used many times to successfully help deliver a baby without having to resort to surgical methods, they have also caused undue harm to newborns when used incorrectly or by a doctor who was not trained properly.

According to the Mayo Clinic, forceps should only be used to guide a baby out of the birth canal and never as a means to pull the child from the womb. They generally are only used when you are in full labor and your body is prepared to deliver, but you are having trouble actually pushing the baby out. Often doctors will use forceps to avoid a C-section.

Delivery with forceps comes with some serious risks to you and the baby. There is a risk of damage to the baby's skull and bones. They could cause trauma to the eyes or nerves. For you, there is an increased risk of tearing, weakened pelvic muscles, bladder issues and uterine rupture.

Typically, a doctor will give you an option to use forceps or have a C-section. Remember, though, C-sections also carry risks. You need to discuss your options with the doctor to figure out what is best for your situation. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
