What are the risks of untreated C diff.?

A C. diff infection can be very serious if left untreated. The risk of an infection is high if you are in a New York health care facility or have been on antibiotics. Since it is so easily transmitted, you really cannot protect yourself from getting it, especially if you are in the hospital and under the care of medical professionals. If your doctor fails to diagnose the condition, it could lead to complications that could impact your health in serious ways.

According to the Mayo Clinic, C. diff is generally not that serious in a healthy person. However, if your immune system is compromised in some way, you face greater risks of complications. The biggest risk for anyone with a C. diff infection is dehydration. This is because of the loose stools associated with the infection and the difficulty you may have in staying hydrated. You may also face a risk for toxic megacolon. This is when the colon cannot expel stool or gas and becomes swollen. It can lead to a rupture, which can be fatal. In any case, if you have this happen, you will likely need surgery.

You may also develop holes in your large intestine from the damage to intestinal lining as a result of the infection. This can lead to a more serious infection that can lead to death. Finally, you are at risk for kidney failure, which is a serious condition on its own. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
