How can I best transition my loved one to a nursing home?

Making the decision to put a loved one in a nursing home is never easy. We all hope that our older relatives can maintain their quality of life at their own home, but sometimes that is not plausible. Whether it is due to health conditions or other factors, some older people simply cannot remain in their own homes and need the care a New York nursing home can provide. The best way to ensure the transition goes smoothly is to make it easier on your loved one.

Care Conversations notes that the process can be made easier if you involve your loved one in choosing the nursing home and making the decisions. It is also a good idea to prepare yourself. Make sure you do your research on any places you are considering. Get literature, schedule visits and plan how you will begin the discussion with your loved one. Help him or her understand why the move is necessary and try to plan how you will handle objections.

Make things easier by bringing items from his or her home and making the new space feel familiar. Always let your loved one know he or she can contact you whenever needed. Making yourself available can ease worries. You also need to visit regularly. You may even create a visitation schedule so your loved one knows exactly when you will be coming.

Make sure to also stay in contact with the nursing home staff. Keep up-to-date on your loved one's care. Find out what he or she is involved in, such as activities and special events. Address issues as soon as they come up. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
