Medical conditions that are often misdiagnosed

Many people do not realize how common misdiagnoses are in the medical community. According to USA Today, the frequency of medical misdiagnosis in the health care community is between five and 44 percent; that comes out to millions of misdiagnoses a year.

Doctors must rely on a variety of factors to accurately diagnose their patients, such as medical histories, current health concerns, the efficiency of staff, availability of treatments and their work ethic. Negligence can arise when there are issues in the care delivery process and patients present with vague and confusing symptoms, causing physicians to erroneously diagnosis them. Some health diseases are challenging for doctors to identify because there is a lack of diagnostic procedures and some ailments have similar symptoms, states CNN.com.

Lupus, anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and cancer are several of many severe and chronic health conditions that doctors overlook and mistakenly misdiagnose. It is not unusual for people to experience a decline in their health as they spend years going through many testing procedures, trying out different medications and dealing with a lot of trial and error, and financial issues from medical bills before their physicians finally figure out what is wrong with them.

Delays in diagnosing patients can be detrimental and cause discomfort, the development of additional ailments and even death. The impact is so significant in some patients that many of them find it necessary to retain legal counsel to hold the ones responsible for their pain and suffering accountable for their medical negligence.
