How employee burnout can lead to medical malpractice

When it comes to medical errors and negligence, many New Yorkers might not realize that the issue is one that continues to plague the health care industry. Many physicians and nurses are not the cold and callous individuals that many people think they are. Instead, patients are finding themselves in danger of receiving bad care because the very professionals they must rely on are overworked and burnout. 

According to Becker’s Hospital Review, medication errors often occur because nurses have too little time to provide each of their patients with the proper attention necessary to prescribe educate and administer medication properly and properly assist with their needs. 

Nurses and doctors who are overworked are also stressed out. High-stress levels make it harder for them to stay alert, keep track of details and follow proper care protocol to provide patients with the care they require and deserve. High levels of stress in health care workers, especially physicians have a significant impact on the quality of care they give patients, states MSU Today. 

Many health care workers consider stress to be a necessary side effect of their careers and a big risk to their work performance and well-being. However, as their patient loads continue to increase, so the dangers to patients. 

Staff burnout in the health care industry is a major hazard for patients. It is becoming more important than ever for medical organizations to implement better scheduling and employment practices to protect their physicians, nurses and other health care workers to improve patient care delivery and outcomes.
