A closer look at how you can stay safe in the hospital

You have just received word that your upcoming health care treatment is going to require a prolonged stay at a hospital in New York. While that thought may be met with hesitation in regards to putting your life and routine on hold temporarily, you should also be thinking about your safety during your time at the hospital. At Futterman, Sirotkin & Seinfeld, LLP, we understand the risks that hospital patients face when they put their lives in the hands of health care professionals.

Every day, hospital staff are responsible for addressing the health care needs of hundreds of different patients, each with individual needs that often require assessment. Under these circumstances, it is not difficult to see how sometimes a lapse in communication, confusion or even blatant ignorance can quickly put your life in danger if your doctor gets you mixed up with someone else. There are also risks associated with surgical errors, anesthesia mistakes and even mix-ups with drugs.

Consumer Reports suggests that you do the following to stay safe during your hospital stay:

  • If you know which hospital you will be staying at, visit the facility ahead of time. Ask questions and be aware of what you should expect throughout your stay.
  • Keep a journal of what happens each day you are at the hospital. If you suspect a mistake has been made, document everything in detail.
  • Ask someone you trust to accompany you to the hospital. This person could be a family member or a friend.

By keeping these suggestions in mind, you can take control of your safety and reduce your risks of being the victim of hospital negligence. For more information about medical malpractice, visit our web page.
