Can you prevent an infection at your surgical site?

Coming to terms with the fact that you need surgery can sometimes be difficult, especially if the procedure is one that you are unfamiliar with. While you may have taken every precaution to understand what will happen and why it needs to happen, you do not have complete control over your surgeon's actions during your procedure. Fortunately, there are things you can do to protect yourself and prevent an infection from happening after your surgery takes place in New York.

Your efforts to keep yourself healthy, verify that the operation is happening in the right place and ask your physician any questions you may have, are all excellent ways to prevent an error from occurring. However, you are still subject to the risks of an infection happening at the site of the surgery once everything is set and done. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, here are some of the things you can do to make sure that your surgery site stays sanitized and free from germs:

  • Ask any attending physician or nurse to thoroughly wash his or her hands before dressing your wound.
  • Make sure you understand how to properly care for your wound.
  • Be aware of symptoms that indicate an infection including redness, swelling or fever.
  • Understand who you should contact if you notice anything unusual.
  • Do not let anyone touch your wound unless they are medical personnel.
