Factors that increase the chances of a birth injury occurring

For many expecting parents in New York, the thought of bringing home a new baby from the hospital is surrounded with feelings of happiness, excitement and love. However, they may also feel some anxiety, especially if they are first-time parents. While birth injuries are often able to be corrected, it is still important for parents to understand which factors heighten their child's chance of suffering a birth injury so they can do their best to avoid putting their baby at risk.

According to Medscape, vigilant obstetricians can often recognize and address many risks before they pose a threat to the infant's well-being and safety. Common factors that contribute to birth injuries may include the following:

  • The use of instruments like forceps or vacuums during the delivery of a baby.
  • Traction during delivery that is excessive.
  • Infants that are abnormally large.
  • Vaginal deliveries where the baby is breech.

If parents suspect that their infant has suffered a birth injury, The Herald-News makes two important recommendations. First, parents should watch for signs that their infant is injured. Any behavior that does not seem normal should be brought to the attention of a doctor. They should also document their concerns, which could be used as evidence later on. Second, if a birth injury is detected, they should take action immediately. Parents who wait too long to do anything about their child's injury may unnecessarily create more discomfort for their child. They may also experience unnecessary stress and financial pressure if they are not proactive about getting their concerns addressed.
