Proactive patients may prevent hospital negligence

Whenever people arrive at New York hospitals seeking treatment for a medical condition, they place a heavy amount of trust in the hired health care professionals to provide thorough care. However, there are stories popping up frequently about patients who have suffered injuries and worsened health as the result of hospital negligence. Fortunately, patients who are proactive about their care and take preventative measures to protect their safety, are at a much lower risk of falling victim to medical malpractice of some kind.

According to John Hopkins Medicine, there are several important things that patients can do to stay safe in a hospital setting. These include the following:

  • They should always ask questions about their treatment and repeat what they have heard to clarify their understanding.
  • They should be proactive about selecting someone they trust to make critical decisions regarding their treatment if they become incapacitated.
  • They should be an advocate in creating a discharge plan and make sure they understand under what conditions their release will be granted.
  • They should compile valuable information regarding their medical history, medications they are currently taking and any allergies they may have.
  • They should carefully follow any instructions regarding recovery and treatment to expedite the healing process and guarantee that progress is being made.
  • They should consider asking a trusted friend or family member to accompany them for an added measure of security.

It is critical that patients stay on top of their health and treatment to better protect their safety and well-being. The Washington Post reports that medical malpractice is responsible for nearly 98,000 deaths every year.
