Doctor, hospital named in lawsuit after costly surgical error

Every day, doctors in New York perform surgeries on their patients in hopes of providing relief from pain, healing and a better chance at having optimal health. During these procedures, communication is critical to guarantee that no mistakes are made that could ultimately compromise the long-term health, comfort and safety of the patient being operated on. However, there are times when lapses in judgment, blatant ignorance or careless mistakes result in missteps that are costly in terms of professional reputation as well as patient well-being.

This was the case for a California woman who has recently filed a lawsuit against a hospital and a surgeon who she claims are responsible for significant pain and suffering she endured as the result of a surgical mishaps. According to the woman, she underwent an exploratory laparotomy to have a tumor removed from her stomach. During the surgery, the doctor allegedly left an 8-inch surgical forceps inside of the woman and continued to stitch her up. Following the surgery, the woman noticed worsening symptoms related to pain in her back, kidneys and stomach. An x-ray revealed the forceps and the woman went in for another surgery to have the tool removed. Because her small intestine had since wrapped around the handle of the forceps, doctors had to remove 18 inches of her small intestine. The woman is seeking damages for medical expenses and lost wages related to the incident.

If someone has been a victim of medical malpractice, they may benefit significantly from hiring an attorney. A legal professional has the experience and knowledge to facilitate the process of creating a case that is based on factual evidence.
