How can you protect your safety during a visit to the ER?

If your health or the well-being of a loved one has been compromised and you have to make a trip to the emergency room, chances are you are relying on the expertise of qualified health care professionals to prescribe a treatment plan. However, the doctors and nurses who are responsible for treating you and your loved ones are also subject to the risks of making a mistake. Because of the sometimes-chaotic environment of many hospital emergency rooms in New York, communication can fall through the cracks or careless missteps are made which can significantly compromise your safety and health.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect yourself if you have to visit the ER, and ways that you can encourage responsibility from your health care provider. According to U.S. News, some of the things you can do include the following:

  • Write down your allergies: Make sure that the person treating you is aware of all of the allergies you may have to certain medications and prescriptions.
  • Confirm your understanding: Once you have been given instructions for your treatment, confirm your understanding by asking questions and repeating what your doctor has said. It is also wise to ask about what types of results to expect at certain points throughout your treatment so you can better assess that things are progressing and not getting worse.
  • Be prepared: It is never a bad idea to keep a brief medical history written down somewhere where it is readily accessible if you have to go to the emergency room. This way, you can be confident that doctors are aware of your past even if you are not in the position to disclose your medical history.
