Can you escape becoming a victim of medical malpractice?

If you are one of the many New York patients seeking medical treatment, you probably place a high amount of trust in your health care provider to deliver quality care. However, medical malpractice is not unheard of, which means you are at risk of injury if your doctor makes an oversight. Fortunately, you can do your due diligence to avoid becoming a victim of a medical error.

According to Organic Lifestyle Magazine, there are several precautionary steps that you can take to improve the kind of care you receive. Here are some of the things you can do:

  • Be forthright with your personal information. Make sure that your doctor knows your name, birth date, previous medical conditions and any antibiotics you are currently taking.
  • Ask someone you trust to accompany you to important appointments. You can rely on your friend or family member to confirm the information you are receiving.
  • Do your research and check the background of the doctors you see. Additionally, look at the reviews of hospitals, outpatient facilities and doctor’s offices.
  • Ask for an obvious mark on a surgery location if you are being operated on. This way, you can greatly reduce the risk of wrong-site surgery.
  • Ask for confirmation of the information on your chart. Chart-checking is an excellent way to guarantee that all parties are on the same page.

If you ever question the information you are receiving or think that your doctor is mistaken, always verbalize your concerns right away. The information in this article is intended for educational purposes only and should not be taken as legal advice.
