Examining resident-on-resident nursing home abuse

On Behalf of | Sep 21, 2016 | Nursing Home Neglect |

Most in Queens may assume that when people come to us here at Futterman, Sirotkin and Seinfeld LLP with claims of nursing home abuse, such accusations are typically leveled against caregivers. Yet if you have a family member or friend in a long-term care facility, the staff members are not the only ones that you may need to be worried about. Studies have shown that abuse between nursing home residents may be much more common thank you think. The results of such abuse may be just as devastating as that suffered at the hands of caregivers.

A 2016 report released by the Annals of Internal Medicine may shed light on how prevalent resident-on-resident abuse truly is. The research detailed in this report was conducted at 10 separate nursing homes in New York. Of the over 2000 residents that participated, roughly one in five reported having suffered mistreatment from another resident. All forms of abuse were reported, including

  •          Verbal
  •          Physical
  •          Sexual

Other incidents reported included rude and menacing gestures as well as invasions of privacy. Certain factors were shown to contribute to higher rates of abuse, as well. These included the levels of cognitive impairment witnessed in the residents involved, as well as units housing dementia patients or areas with high nursing caseloads.

This report goes on to speculate that abuse between residents could be even more prevalent than the results of the study showed. This speculation comes from the assumption that such abuse, like all forms of nursing home neglect, may often go unreported. This may place even more responsibility on you to look for troubling signs with your family member or friend and report your suspicions to the appropriate parties.
