Woman dead after New York hospital allegedly misdiagnosed her

When New York residents seek medical attention at a hospital, they reasonably expect to receive at least a minimum standard of care. However, this is not always the case. According to a study in the Journal of Patient Safety, as many as 440,000 patients die after being harmed while at U.S. hospitals each year. This figure includes instances where medical staff directly cause harm to patients, such as when a sponge is left inside someone during surgery, as well as when doctors fail to properly provide treatment to those who seek their help.

A lack of proper care is what a Brooklyn husband alleges recently led to the death of his wife. There is some speculation that the woman may have been suffering from the effects of bacterial meningitis when paramedics found her in a distressed state in her apartment – the medical examiner’s office is investigating. Yet, instead of checking for the presence of an infection, the woman was diagnosed as having smoked synthetic marijuana by an emergency room nurse.

This alleged lack of care by the hospital has led the woman’s family to ask the state to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death. Before the woman went into cardiac arrest inside the hospital, the husband states that she had not been seen by a doctor. It is unknown whether any tests were conducted on the woman by the staff to determine the cause of her symptoms. She was brought into the hospital, tied down after she could not be subdued from crawling or screaming on a bed when paramedics arrived.

Medical malpractice cases are complicated and often difficult to navigate without help. Affected patients and their families may find it helpful to seek the guidance of a legal professional to fully understand their options.
