What is neglect and how prevalent is it in nursing homes? Part 4

According to a publication by the National Center on Elder Abuse, you are the victim of neglect if the employees at your New York care facility refuse or fail to provide for your basic safety, emotional or physical needs. Without this proper care, you may experience severe medical or mental consequences. If you do not receive your medications as prescribed by your doctor, if you develop bed sores because the staff fail to move you properly, if you are malnourished, or if staff ignore you or isolate you, then you may be the victim of this type of nursing home abuse. Other signs that you or a loved one in a nursing home may be neglected include a disregard for your personal hygiene and failing to give you proper dental care. However, many actions and inactions by your home's staff can lead to charges of neglect.

If you suspect your nursing home of neglect, you are, unfortunately, in the company of a large percentage of residents in your situation. A 2014 report from the U.S. Inspector General states that even if you are only in a nursing home for short-term rehab, you have a 33 percent chance of experiencing harm due to outright negligence, improper medication management or inadequate monitoring and care, almost 60 percent of which is preventable. That number only increases if you become a long-term resident in a nursing home. The NCEA also states that if you file a report with the National Ombudsman Reporting System, which tracks nursing home complaints, you have a 14 percent chance of filing that report due solely to gross neglect.

Nursing home neglect is a serious problem that could cause you and your fellow residents severe harm or death if left unaddressed. This information should be regarded as purely educational, as each case of elder abuse is unique.
