Consumer information website recommended for shutdown

Every day, thousands of people in New York seek medical care. Whether for routine, preventative needs, emergency situations for ongoing care for a chronic illness, there is a wide variety of reasons that require a visit to a doctor or a hospital. Patients have the right to be able to choose their medical providers and this alone can at times be a challenging task. Concerns about medical mistakes such as surgical errors, misdiagnosed illnesses, incorrect medication dosages and more abound due to the very real threat of such situations.

New York Surgical Mistakes Attorneys, consumer advocates and more understand the need for people to learn about their physicians before making provider choices. Fifteen years ago, the state approved the development of a website that would provide free information to consumers about physicians. Known as the New York Physician Profile, it offered details about allegations of misconduct, disciplinary steps taken by the Health Department's Office of Professional Medical Misconduct and more.

The goal of this site was to empower patients to be able to make good decisions in selecting doctors and to keep people safe from surgical mistakes and more. Roughly 35,000 visits to the site were recorded in December 2014. However, a new effort by the Governor seeks to end the existence of this site. Reports indicate that the Governor believes the information is readily available elsewhere on the web also for free and that the state can save valuable dollars by shutting down the site. Advocate groups are opposed to the action.

People who face operations or other serious treatments deserve to feel safe in their medical care. Anyone who suspects that they may be a victim of medical malpractice may wish to consult with an attorney.
