What are some examples of surgical errors?

When a patient prepares to undergo a surgical procedure, they probably don't expect to become the victim of a surgical error. However, in New York, NY, these errors occur more frequently than many people realize and can be life-threatening. Surgical mistakes continue to happen for a variety of reasons and also take many forms.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality posted informative facts about surgical errors on their website. According to the AHRQ, there are a number of examples of surgical errors, including wrong-site surgery, wrong-procedure surgery and wrong-patient surgery. With a wrong-site surgery, a physician may operate on the wrong side of the body or on an incorrect site altogether. During wrong-procedure surgeries, a physician may locate the correct individual and operate on the proper site, but perform the wrong type of procedure. When it comes to wrong-patient surgeries, physicians operate on the wrong individual, which is sometimes caused by physicians failing to differentiate between people who have similar last names, for example.

Even though surgical errors are never supposed to happen, they take place too often and sometimes result in serious injuries and loss of life. As a result, it is important for people to be aware of the risks if they are preparing for an operation and take action if they have suffered due to a negligent surgical error. In some cases, surgical mistakes constitute medical malpractice and it is important to hold those who are responsible for the errors accountable.

This information does not constitute legal advice and was put together to help provide a better understanding of surgical errors.
