What are some examples of nursing home abuse?

On Behalf of | Dec 4, 2014 | Nursing Home Neglect |

Every day, an unacceptable number of people are mistreated and abused in nursing homes throughout the country. As a result, it is essential to properly identify and address any abuse immediately. In New York, NY, far too many nursing home patients have suffered unnecessarily and people can help prevent more abuse from occurring when they recognize it and take action right away.

The National Center on Elder Abuse lists a number of different ways that abuse manifests itself in nursing homes. The NCEA also provides very helpful information on some of the signs to look out for, but it is important to remember that nursing home neglect and abuse is not always apparent. For example, a patient may be emotionally or psychologically abused through insults, verbal attacks, threats and isolation from friends and family members. Some of the potential signs of this abuse include emotional agitation, lack of communication and unusual behavior such as rocking or biting. Physical abuse is another serious problem in nursing homes and can be identified when a patient has bruises, signs that they were restrained, changes in behavior, broken eyeglasses or cuts.

Additionally, a patient may experience neglect when they do not receive proper care and could suffer from dehydration, malnutrition and many other hardships (lack of heat, soiled bed sheets, etc.). Other examples of nursing home abuse include sexual abuse, abandonment and financial exploitation. Whenever abuse occurs, victims and their families may want to consider taking legal action and absolutely must hold abusers accountable.

This information does not constitute legal advice, but hopefully it has helped outline some of the different ways that nursing home abuse continues to take place.
