Nursing home abuse on the rise

On Behalf of | Dec 24, 2014 | Nursing Home Neglect |

When nursing home neglect and abuse takes place, it is imperative for victims and their family members to do everything in their power to hold abusers accountable. Sadly, in New York, NY, and throughout the United States, far too many victims of nursing home negligence have remained silent. From bedsores to improper medication and verbal attacks, there are a wide variety of hardships elderly patients endure every day. This is a serious problem across the country and victims should make sure their voices are heard.

Experts say that nursing home abuse is not only on the rise, but significantly under-reported as well. Furthermore, some claim that current statistics are inaccurate and do not reveal the full extent of the problem because a majority of elder abuse cases are not detected or treated.

According to the American Psychological Association, most elderly victims of abuse are female. Victims may experience abuse at the hands of family members or from within the nursing home they are living in. Abuse takes many forms and may be physical, emotional, sexual or even financial.

When people help their loved ones move into a nursing home, they probably expect the facility to take care of their beloved family member. However, abuse occurs more often than many people realize and can be considerably painful for victims and their families. Anyone who has dealt with this firsthand should stand up for the rights of the elderly and may want to consider taking legal action. Additionally, many people benefit from talking about the details of the situation with an experienced legal professional.
