Evaluating the prevalence of birth injuries

When expectant parents head to the delivery room, many think they will move forward with the birth process without complications. Unfortunately, in New York, NY, and around the country, some parents have to deal with birth injuries. These injuries are especially troubling and can cause a number of short-term and long-term consequences, such as cerebral palsy and fetal death. For those who have had their lives turned upside down after a birth injury that occurred due to negligence, it is imperative to take action right away.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality examined the number of birth injuries that occurred in certain community hospitals and published insightful information pertaining to the issue on their website. According to the data, which was taken from community hospitals in 2008, the risk-adjusted birth injury rate was 2.29 out of every 1,000 among patients who were eligible. Furthermore, an estimated 1,952 adverse events were believed to have taken place in American community hospitals over the course of the year.

According to findings published on the National Center for Biotechnology Information's website, in 2003 an estimated 29 incidents of birth trauma were believed to occur for every 1,000 births. The most common types of birth injuries were scalp injuries, skeletal injuries and clavicle fractures. Additionally, the findings reference the difficulties associated with accurately determining the birth trauma rate in the United States, with estimates ranging from 0.2 to 37 incidents out of every 1,000 births. The piece also points out that the birth trauma rate in the U.S. is not clear and that there is a need for further research to pinpoint effective methods of reducing the prevalence of birth injuries.
