Hospital confidentially settles medical malpractice lawsuit

When a loved one is seriously injured, family members often have to put their lives on hold to act as a caretaker. This can take a financial and emotional toll on the family and may be an important factor during a medical malpractice trial in New York.

Grand Strand Regional Medical Center has come to a settlement with a former patient and his wife. Following a serious car crash nine years ago, the man was treated at the hospital. He was being prepared for emergency surgery to fix the severed arteries in his arm and had ominous vital signs when a surgeon ordered a CAT scan on his knee.

According to the couple’s attorney, the decision to scan his knee resulted in a 30 minute surgery delay. During this time a portion of the patient’s spinal cord died and he is now a paraplegic, meaning that his legs waist and legs are permanently paralyzed. The details of the medical malpractice settlement with the hospital are confidential.

The couple also sued the surgeon who ordered the CAT scan on the man’s knee. This lawsuit went to trial, where a jury found the doctor negligent. They awarded $550,000 to the man’s wife and caretaker and $2.3 million to the man.

Due to the negligent decision of one surgeon, this man’s life is drastically changed. Not only will he never be able to walk again, but also his wife needs to devote her time to caring for him. If your loved one has been injured or killed due to hospital negligence or doctor errors, you may be entitled to compensation. You may want to contact an attorney to discuss your legal options.
