Elder advocacy group fails New York nursing home facilities

When an individual is no longer able to properly care for themselves, their family may decide that putting them in a nursing care facility is the best way to ensure that the elderly individual receives the medical assistance and supervision that they need. Unfortunately, oftentimes residents of a nursing home are not treated with respect and are even abused.

An elder advocacy group recently ranked New York nursing home care facilities and have failed the state as a whole. Unfortunately, ten other states also failed. The report compiled information on complaints, inspections, deficiencies and it even looked at staffing. It then graded them according to national quality measures from last year. According to the report, only ten states actually got an A grade.

America currently has around 1.5 million nursing home residents, with an expected increase of 40 percent in the next ten years. If the study is accurate, only 20 percent of the nation’s assisted living facilities safeguard their residents from nursing home neglect and mistreatment. As such, families should be more aware than ever about the care that their loved ones are receiving.

Many families are turning to hidden cameras to capture evidence of nursing home abuse. After one elderly woman showed up with bruises on her face, her family set up a hidden camera. The woman’s aides were subsequently arrested due to evidence of mistreatment that was captured on the camera.

If you believe that a loved one has been abused at the hands of a negligent nursing home facility, contact an attorney who understands your rights and can clearly express them to you.
