Advanced equipment doesn't eliminate surgical errors, study shows

In many ways, technology has become a beacon of hope in the medical field. Medical equipment advances now lead to quicker and more accurate diagnoses. Tackling an illness before it becomes untreatable can give New York patients the time needed to fight their sicknesses and recover. Furthermore, technological developments aid surgeons in the operating room by allowing them to perform complicated and risky surgeries that require smaller incisions. As a result, a patient's recovery time is greatly reduced.

However, this technological breakthrough in surgical techniques is not without its own associated side effects, researchers say. A study published in BMJ Quality & Safety reviewed over two dozen previous studies that focused on surgical mistakes. They found that it is much more probable that an error will occur during an operation that is widely dependent on technology. They also maintain that nearly 50 percent of surgical errors listed were due to the fact that the equipment was not properly configured. Other indications show that about 15 percent of medical malpractice claims assert that equipment and technology issues were involved in surgical errors.

When a patient signs up for surgery, they likely do so with the thought that they are on the right track toward health and wellness. The last thing they expect is to endure often life-threatening complications at the hand of the surgeon they trusted to make them whole. If you or a loved one has been the victim of a surgical mistake, seeking the advice of an attorney can help answer questions you may have.
