Criminal charges filed against 2 New York women for elder abuse

When a person in New York City decides to put an elderly family member into a care center or nursing home, there is always some risk that the person will be the victim of nursing home neglect or abuse. It is therefore, a good idea for that person to carefully monitor the center and its staff to make sure that the patient is not being overmedicated or injured by those who are supposed to provide care.

A World War II veteran was the victim of nursing home abuse in 2012 when he did not want to take a shower. The man, who is now deceased, suffered with dementia and therefore was not always aware of what he was doing according to his daughter. Two women at the Port Jefferson nursing home are accused of tying him up, beating him, and smothering him with a pillow.

The women deny the accusations even though the investigation by the New York State Attorney General found evidence that the man was beaten. The nursing home suspended the women, who could be sentenced to seven years in prison if they are convicted. The Attorney General hopes that this case will send a message to caregivers that nursing home abuse is unacceptable.

If a person suspects that their family member may be the victim of abuse, they may want to speak with an attorney that handles these kinds of issues. The attorney can help them launch an investigation, bring the matter to the attention of authorities and file a civil lawsuit against the nursing home for negligence.
