Nursing home abuse a growing problem nationwide

There are many older people that live in New York City and at some point in time, children and family members may have to make the difficult decision of placing their older family in a care center. Caring for an elderly adult that suffers from physical or mental issues can be taxing on family and often they believe that in a nursing home, the person will receive the care and attention that they require.

However, this is not always the case. Recent studies and surveys have revealed that nursing home abuse is a growing problem, not only in New York, but across the country. While many people assume that nursing home abuse involves staff in nursing homes it can also include one resident abusing another. A national survey conducted indicates that such abuse is common in nursing homes.

When it comes to abuse at the hands of nursing home staff, another survey showed that 25 percent of its participants had been victims of nursing home abuse. The surveys and studies also revealed something else—that residents who were wealthy were just as likely to be victims of nursing home neglect and abuse as residents who were poor.

Agencies that govern nursing homes in New York would be wise to pay attention to the indications these separate studies point to. While it may be impossible to eradicate nursing home negligence and abuse entirely, imposing heftier fines and taking stronger action may encourage nursing homes to take steps to keep their residents safe. For families of nursing home abuse victims, they may find it helpful to speak with an experienced attorney.
