Mistakes In Mammograms, PAP Smears And Tissue Cultures Cause Needless Suffering

We know what it takes to win such cases, and we have recovered millions of dollars for injured individuals and their families. We are ready to represent you, too.

Errors Related To Mammograms

Taking accurate images of a patient's breasts and correctly analyzing those images are a complex science. To make it simpler, the American College of Radiologists has instituted a classification system called Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS). Even with this system in place, misdiagnosis and late diagnosis still occur from time to time.

Three of the most common hospital errors are:

  • Only looking for lumps. Although lumps in breast tissue are an obvious symptom of potential cancer, radiologists must also look for other symptoms such as nipples that pull inward, thick areas of skin, uneven tissue density and more.
  • Delaying appropriate follow-up tests. A patient's health can be seriously compromised if a physician fails to promptly order follow-up testing — such as an ultrasound or biopsy — after an abnormal mammogram.
  • Ignoring the big picture. Physicians need to look at the patient's overall health, not concentrate solely on the results of one mammogram.

Errors Related To PAP Tests

One of the most common mistakes related to PAP smears is relying too heavily on the results. Although it seems like a simple test, the science that goes into the analysis is actually quite complicated. It's surprisingly easy to get inaccurate results.

If the test comes back with abnormal results, a gynecologist should conduct follow-up testing to obtain a full diagnosis. He or she should never order surgery on the basis of a PAP smear alone.

Likewise, if the test comes back with normal results, yet the patient is experiencing other warning symptoms, the gynecologist should conduct a more thorough examination. He or she should not ignore the other symptoms because of the PAP results.
