Nursing Home Care: 3 Family Members Need to Know About Neglect and Abuse

Are you facing nursing home neglect? Are you concerned about the care of a loved one? Here's what you need to know about nursing homes and the law.

If you have an elderly relative who needs round-the-clock care, you may discover that a qualified nursing home provides the right environment for your loved one. A good nursing home should provide thorough and efficient care that enables your loved one to live comfortably in a safe environment. Unfortunately, not all nursing homes are created equal. It's important to be aware that some nursing homes do have serious problems with it comes to the care they provide to their patients. This makes it incredibly important to take your time choosing a nursing home with a solid reputation and experienced staff members who understand how to offer the care and services your loved one needs. Sometimes, even if you've done everything right when it comes to choosing the right facility, you may find that the nursing home you selected lets your relative down. If you're concerned about the possibility of elder abuse or neglect, there are a few things you need to understand.

1. Understaffed facilities may have serious problems with care

If a nursing home facility does not have enough team members, the staff members may not be able to offer appropriate care. For example, nursing homes with too few staff members may not meet health and hygiene standards. They may be stretched too thin and make mistakes when it comes to administering medicine or staying on top of patient care. If you suspect that a nursing home may be understaffed, pay careful attention to your family member's behavior and to the treatment you receive when you visit. As a family member, you are entitled to visit your relative as you see fit, so make sure you stop by regularly.

2. Neglect is not normal and should not be ignored

Understand that your family member deserves to receive appropriate care. If you notice strange bruising on your family member's body or sudden bedsores, it's important to understand that this could be classified as neglect. This is not a normal part of the aging process, nor is it a normal part of nursing home life. Your loved one should be receiving their medication on time, any physical therapy they require, and regular assistance to complete their daily tasks. They should not be ignored and they should not experience discomfort or pain within the nursing home.

3. Identifying the abuse early on is vital

If you suspect that your loved one is experiencing abuse, it's important to catch this as early as possible. Familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of elder and nursing home abuse. For example, does your family member suddenly have a lot of unexplained injuries? Are nursing home staff simply brushing this off as "clumsiness"? Does your relative seem withdrawn? Are they emotionally distant? Don't ignore the signs of elder abuse or expect that if you wait, things will get better. Instead, understand that you may need to take legal action to rectify the situation.

If your loved one has been injured or neglected by nursing home staff, it's time to meet with a personal injury attorney who can help. Reach out today and schedule your consultation.
