Here's what you need to know about surgical complications and medical malpractice

What really happens after a surgical error takes place? Unfortunately, even with the best of care, post-op deaths do happen. Find out what you need to know about staying safe in this article.

Surgery is often a difficult and challenging experience. For some families, a loved one's surgery comes as a surprise. For others, surgeries are planned well in advance and carefully prepared for. No matter what type of surgery your family member is having, however, there are risks involved. Generally, medical professionals will discuss the risks and benefits of a surgery prior to operating; however, sometimes surgical complications or mistakes can lead to an unexpected death. If your loved one has passed away due to surgical complications after their operation, you might be wondering whether your family member's death is due to medical malpractice.

What happens after surgery?

After a patient undergoes surgery, the physician still has an obligation to care for the patient. The doctor will work with his team of professional caregivers to ensure that the patient's health is monitored and that appropriate methods of treatment are utilized. Patients will need to have follow-up visits with their physicians to ensure that the wound site heals and that the surgery was successful. In some cases, patients will remain in the hospital after surgery to ensure they heal properly.

What are possible complications of surgery?

Whether your loved one is going to undergo major or minor surgery, it's important to understand the potential complications that may occur after surgery. In some cases, complications are normal and expected; however, severe complications may be due to medical negligence.

One of the most common types of complications are post-surgical falls. Medical professionals need to take fall precautions to ensure that patients are able to move and be moved safely from one position or place to another. If a patient falls, it's possible that fall prevention steps were not taken by the caregivers.

Another common side effect of surgery is a post-surgical infection. Infections need to be treated promptly by the medical caregiver. Generally, antibiotics or other medication may be prescribed; however, if a patient dies due to a post-operative infection, it may be possible to sue for medical negligence or wrongful death.

Finally, keep in mind that some surgical procedures leave the patient at an increased risk for blood clots. The patient's doctor may prescribe physical therapy as a way to reduce blood clots. Utilizing compression sleeves or blood thinners may also be beneficial.

What is malpractice?

Medical malpractice can take many shapes and forms. Malpractice can range from pharmaceutical errors to misdiagnosis, and yes, even to surgical errors and mistakes. When a patient undergoes surgery, the doctor needs to ensure they are treated to the best of the physician's ability. In some cases, surgical mistakes can lead to extreme complications, including death.

If you lose a loved one due to medical malpractice, reach out to an attorney. Your lawyer will evaluate your case and talk with you about your options and how you can work together to prove that your loved one died as the result of medical negligence.
