Recognizing a surgical site infection

It is never easy to submit yourself to surgery. In the end, however, such intervention may be necessary in order to address your health concerns. The expectation that comes with surgery is that you will emerge from it feeling better than ever, and in many cases, that is what happens. Yet several clients have come to us here at Futterman, Sirotkin and Seinfeld, LLP throughout the years having suffering complications from their surgeries in Queens. Often, those problems include surgical site infections. If you find yourself failing to adequately recover from your surgery, it could be due to the same issue.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, surgical site infections routinely rank among the most common healthcare-associated ailments. In fact, an estimated 157,500 were reported in the U.S. in 2011 alone. Such infections may produce only a minor discomfort at first, yet if left untreated, they can quickly progress into serious problems that may even become life-threatening.

Thus, the key to avoiding serious complications due to a surgical site infection is to identify and treat it early. Initial indicators of infection may include:

  •          Skin irritation or redness around your incision
  •          Continuous pain concentrated in the treatment area
  •          The skin around your surgical site feeling warm to the touch

Those signs may be accompanied by a high fever or a general feeling of malaise. Noticing drainage, pus, or an unusual odor coming from your incision could confirm that you indeed do have an infection. Seek treatment immediately if you begin to notice such signs. A course of antibiotics may be enough to combat it. Severe infections may require subsequent surgical intervention to clean the wound followed by wound care therapy. You can learn more about dealing with the after effects of surgery by continuing to explore our site.
