Identifying potential post-operative problem indicators

Like most people in Queens who have to undergo surgical treatment, you likely view your ordeal as being over once you come out of surgery. However, we here at Futterman, Sirotkin, and Seinfeld, LLP have a long list of past clients who may tell you that the end of surgery can signal the onset of a whole new range of issues. Post-surgical complications are common in healthcare, with many of them causing problems that could be even greater than the ones that you initially sought treatment for. What is so troubling about these types of medical errors is that many are easily preventable.

It may be easy to forget that your surgeon is only human, and thus subject to performance and judgment errors. These may include failing to close internal incisions, mistakenly cutting into healthy organs or tissue, or accidently leaving instruments or supplies inside of you. Surgeons are expected to go through post-surgical checklists to ensure that everything done and used during a procedure is accounted for. Yet even with the expectation that such preventative practices are being followed, the aforementioned issues still occur.

Even still, the problems arising from such issues will often immediately begin to manifest themselves. Thus, surgeons and other caretakers should constantly be on the lookout for potential issues during your post-operative care. The World Health Organization lists the following as specific issues that your providers should be on the watch for after your surgery:

  •          Hypoxia or airway obstructions
  •          Internal or external hemorrhaging
  •          Hypertension or hypotension
  •          Vomiting or aspiration
  •          Vertigo or other residual narcosis
  •          Shivering or excess postoperative pain

A failure on the part of your care team to pick up on such indictors could be viewed as negligence. Information on spotting potential negligent actions by healthcare providers can be found here on our site.
