Nursing home officials accused of covering up abuse cases

Incidents of nursing home neglect in Kew Gardens are often shocking and abhorrent, yet at least the families of those housed at such facilities can rest assured that their administrators take such offenses very seriously. However, even that security is often not guaranteed. Allegations of abuse can often sully a facility’s reputation, which may prompt nursing home officials to try and deal with such cases “in house.” However, the law requires that such incidents be reported. Facility administrators and supervisors hoping to avoid outside scrutiny may therefore be tempted to falsify records.

Those are the allegations being made by two men in Illinois who are suing the facility they once worked for. Both claimed that they were told by supervisors to falsify reports to cover up allegations of abuse, and were subsequently fired for refusing to do so. One also claimed that in one case, his report detailing an alleged sexual assault was destroyed. Each of incidents described resulted in citations being issued against the nursing home.

One of the plaintiffs also related accounts of security guards beating residents up, as well as himself being made to take certain residents who appeared to have not been cared for away from the facility when state inspectors came. In response the lawsuit, facility representatives say that one of the men was fired for not fulfilling the tasks related to his job, and the other was not retained after a transition of ownership.

Those with loved ones in nursing homes should keep an eye out for signs of abuse, as well as whether or not accusations are taken seriously by its administrators. If it its believed they are not, then those same people may want to work with an attorney to initiate the appropriate action.
