What are drug interaction injuries?

Before you take any medications, it is essential that you learn whether or not those medications can have potentially negative interactions with each other and anything else you put in your body. If you or your caregiver fail to do so, you could end up with a serious injury caused by the adverse reactions of the drugs working on your system. This is known as a drug interaction injury.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, medications are specifically formulated to work in certain conditions and to relieve certain ailments. In the U.S., FDA is tasked with ensuring that every drug on the market is safe to take within these circumstances. However, when used in combination with other medications or substances, many drugs become unstable, have their effects amplified or work in a way that they would not regularly be expected to do. This interaction can occur due to the use of multiple drugs, interactions between one or more medications and food, or from a pre-existing medical condition.

For example, if you choose to drink alcohol when you take morphine, the effects of both the drug and alcohol are greatly magnified. This can result in respiratory distress, infection of the liver, high blood pressure, coma and death. Even seemingly common drugs, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen have the ability to cause dangerous drug interactions. For this reason, it is essential to follow the directions you receive from your doctor and pharmacist before ingesting any kind of medication.

Drug interaction injuries can happen at home or at the hospital or other healthcare facility. It is important for you to be aware at all times of what drugs you are being given and why, and ensure that any combination of drugs you take is safe.
